What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with exacerbations and remissions. It can affect all ages.It is also known as seborrhea. It generally causes red scaly skin lesions or occasionally weepy and oozy eruptions.

What are the causes of seborrheic dermatitis?

This condition can be seen in the areas where sebum is highly produced so oily skin can be a factor.Also, many patients have abundant growth of normal skin yeast , Pityrosporum in the affected areas. It has been found that patients who have severe central nervous system are more troubled with the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis.

Is it contagious?

No it is not.

What are the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis?

The skin of the scalp or the affected area itches, burns or even becomes red. The scales which flake off can be yellowish or whitish in colour and are oily. It can present as dandruff.The areas which are affected by this disease are:

  • Scalp, MidFace, ears, eyebrows,
  • Middle part of the chest, mid back
  • groin
  • Skin folds
  • Below the breasts

It also affects the skin of the infants and young children, where it mostly affects the scalp - cradle cap and the diaper area.Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment is varrying according to the conditions.

What are the treatment options?
Seborrheic dermatitis is a lifelong issue.Dandruff Treatment is necessory in some cases.Adults who suffer from this disease can use shampoo which contains one of these major ingredients:

  • Ketoconazole
  • Coal tar
  • Selenium sulphide
  • Salicyclic acid
  • Zinc pyrithione

In case of infants, regularly shampooing their scalp with baby shampoo and warm water helps.If that does not work, then one needs to talk to a dermatologist for some medicated shampoo.
Other measures of treatment include:

  • Corticosteroid ointment/ lotions
  • Topical calcineurin inhibitors
  • Antifungal creams or lotions
  • Oral- anti fungals and steroids if very severe
