What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a procedure which reduces the unwanted hair in the body. Under this treatment, highly concentrated light is targeted towards the hair follicles. Pigment (Melanin) in the follicles absorb light which further result in hair reduction.
The process of laser hair removal is most effective for people with light skin and dark
hair. But, as technology has advanced, this process can be performed on people with dark skin as well. However, laser hair removal does not work for grey, white or blond hair. Laser hair removal slows down the growth of hair( permanent hair reduction)but it does not guarantee permanent removal of hair. Most hair needs 6 to 8 sessions to show a significant reduction. Also, periodic maintenance treatments are needed. However, your dermatologist can give you the correct recommended number during a consultation.
Types of laser for hair removal
There are many laser options available for this treatment. Among them are the NdYAG laser, the Diode laser, and the Alexandrite laser. The Laser devices vary according to the skin types. Alexandrite is the best option for fair skin, but for darker skin, Diode and NdYAG are good options.

Procedure of laser hair removal:
During the procedure, the doctor reexamines the skin and hair and decides the laser parameter. The area to be treated is marked, shaved and a cool gel is applied to the skin. The light is absorbed by the treated hair which usually falls off the next week or so. There might be a slight uneasiness - feeling of warmth during the session which is generally eased with the cooling gel at the tip of the laser.
