What is psoriasis?
It is a chronic, inflammatory and non-contagious skin condition which produces plaques of scaly and thickened skin. It causes cells to rapidly build up over the surface of the skin.The dry flakes of the skin are the result of the excessive proliferation of the skin by the inflammatory chemicals produced by T-lymphocytes. It can affect any body part. In most of the cases, the condition worsens at the time of winter. It can affect people of any age. There are different types of psoriasis - plaque, nail, scalp, guttate, erythrodermic, pustular, psoriatic arthritis.

What are the causes of psoriasis?

The exact cause behind this disease is still unknown. Genetic predisposition can play a role. Increased Stress levels,skin infection, excessive smoking, alcohol consumption and weather changes can have an impact. Some drugs can aggravate it.

Can any diet help or trigger psoriasis?
Diet rich in omega 3 fatty acid is proven to be of benefit.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?
Psoriasis presents as pinkish scaly lesions which may be itchy or sore at times. Small scaling spots are common in children. Sometimes it can present as dry and cracked skin that may bleed. On scalp - it can look like excessive dandruff or scaling. Some people can have joint pain.

Is it possible to cure psoriasis?
It’s a chronic disease. It can be controlled but the cure is not possible.

What are the treatment options for psoriasis?
Psoriasis treatment depends upon the severity of the disease, age of the patient, comorbidities if any.

The exact reason is unknown. There can be internal and external triggers. A combination of many factors like environmental Irritants, stress, infection, temperature changes, genetics, abnormality of the immune system, defects in the skin barrier play a role.

Eczema causes very itchy rash like areas on the skin. The skin may blister, ooze, become raw or crusty. It may be dry, leathery, scaly at times. Eczema can affect any age group. It can involve any body part.


What is the treatment for eczema?

The treatment includes topicals like emollients, steroid creams, vitamin d analogues, calcineurin inhibitors. Oral antihistamines, antibiotics, steroids. Adults with severe cases of eczema that have failed to respond to other therapies may be prescribed Immunomodulators.
